The wines I have selected are the best matches for the
American-style cuisine we serve. Atlantic salmon and
Chardonnay, steak au poivre and Zinfandel, or crab cakes and
Pinot Blanc are all wonderful matches. Additionally, the wines
on the list are all ready to drink now. Most whites and now
reds made in America are being made to drink at a young age
(upon release) and those which are slightly older have been
cellared until they, too, are ready to drink.
Besides the traditional varietals like Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, I have added
some newer breeds of American wine and some of the lesser
known varietals. "Rhone-style" and "Cal-Italian" wines, for
example, are some of the latest ventures from many of
America's best winemakers and they offer wine drinkers with
some old world varietals made using new wine-growing and
wine-making technology. Many of these newer American wines are
better than those after which they are modeled.
Also, take a look at our wines from the Mid-Atlantic
region.
Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are making some
terrific wines and they will truly surprise you with the high
levels quality.
Finally, I urge you to save a little room after your main
course for dessert with one of our dessert wines or a single
malt
scotch, bourbon, sherry, or port. What a way to cap
off your meal at Harryman House.
Following the hundred or so bottles offered on the list, I
have compiled the most valuable information on the subject
of
wine, in a very condensed form, which can be used when
selecting a wine. I have gathered information from the
greatest wine writers in the world on the subjects of wine
producing regions, the grapes, the wine makers and the wines
themselves and presented it in such a way that it is
both
understandable to a novice and not beneath the
connoisseur.
It is my wish to help you gain more enjoyment form wine by
helping you understand wines, how they are made and
which
wines are truly great.
